As many of you know, George Washington did in fact sleep here in Rocky Hill. From August to November 1783, Washington’s final Revolutionary War headquarters was at Rockingham, widow Margaret Berrien’s house set on a rocky hillside overlooking the Millstone River. It was at Rockingham that he wrote the farewell orders to his troops and awaited the signing of the Treaty of Paris that officially ended the Revolutionary War.
Mary Jacobs Library is proud to present Rockingham: the Road to Peace, a 22-minute movie conceived by the Rockingham Association and produced/directed by Fred Frintrup. Prior to the showing of the movie, Robert F. Jones, Professor of History at Fordham University and author of biographies of George Washington, will discuss the important events that occurred while Washington was at Rockingham and how they shaped American history. The September 23 event will begin at 7:30 pm. We ask that you pre-register by calling 609-924-7073 x4.
As an adjunct to the above program, the MJL Non-fiction Book Discussion group will be discussing Washington’s Crossing by David Hackett Fischer on September 16 at 4:30 pm. Both programs are free and open to the public.
The Neshanic Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 23, 2010, at the Station House on Olive Street in Neshanic Station. Nancy Gahtan, National Garden Club Judge and Garden Club of NJ Board Member will demonstrate types of table designs for flower shows. Prior to the demonstration there will be a light lunch served. Members are urged to bring a coffee mug from home. Prospective members are welcome. Call Diana Reinhardt, 908-369-4362, for further information.
